Below is some information: The spheres of the Tree of Life diagram fall into three columns known as The Pillars. The concept of pillars is a very old one in the mysteries and signifies duality and polarity. According to tradition Hermes Trismegistus concealed the knowledge of the antediluvian world in two pillars. One contained Art and the other contained Science. Entry into Solomon’s Temple was gained between the great pillars of Jachin and Boaz. Jachin means "He will establish," and Boaz, means "strength" (2 Chron 3:17).

This symbolism is carried into the design of the columns of a masonic temple. For Masonry, Freemanson, there are usually two literal pillars in the Lodge, and three are often depicted in masonic art. One of the masonic pillars corresponds to the Sun and is the Jachin Column, whereas the other corresponds to the Moon and is the Boaz Column. In masonic art they are usually depicted on opposite sides from their qabalistic positions.

Qabalistically, the Right-hand of the two, as seen when facing them, is the Pillar of Mercy, and the Left-Hand of the two is the Pillar of Severity. Between them would fall the Middle Pillar, the Pillar of Mildness or Equilibrium. The Right-hand Pillar of Mercy is known as the Silver Pillar. It is the active, male, or projective pillar and symbolizes the energy channel of Ida. It overlies the sephiroth of Chokmah, Chesed, and Netzach. The Left-hand Pillar of Mercy is known as the Black Pillar. It is the passive, female, or receptive pillar and symbolizes the energy channel of Pingala. It overlies the sephiroth of Binah, Geburah, and Hod. The Silver Pillar is the Force side of the Tree, and the Black Pillar is the Form side.

At the head of the Black Pillar is the sephirah of Binah, center of primordial form, and at the head of the Silver Pillar is the sephirah of Chokmah, center of primordial force.

The central sephiroth constitute the Middle Pillar, said to be the pillar of consciousness, depicted in yellow in the diagram. The Middle Pillar symbolizes the force channel of Shushumna. This pillar exists in the polarity created by Force and Form. Above By by Emmanuel Rose © Emmanuel Rose 2000

From the Old Testament: "And King Solomon sent and brought Hiram from Tyre. He was the son of a widow of the tribe of Naphtali, and his father was a man of Tyre, a worker in bronze; and he was full of wisdom, understanding, and skill, for making any work in bronze. He came to King Solomon, and did all his work." "He cast two pillars of bronze. Eighteen cubits was the height of one pillar, and a line of twelve cubits measured its circumference; it was hollow, and its thickness was four fingers; the second pillar was the same. He also made two capitals of molten bronze, to set upon the tops of the pillars; the height of the one capital was five cubits, and the height of the other capital was five cubits."

"Then he made two nets of checker work with wreaths of chain work for the capitals upon the tops of the pillars; a net for the one capital, and a net for the other capital. Likewise he made pomegranates; in two rows round about upon the one network, to cover the capital that was upon the top of the pillar; and he did the same with the other capital. Now the capitals that were upon the tops of the pillars in the vestibule were of lily-work, four cubits. The capitals were upon the two pillars and also above the rounded projection which was beside the network; there were two hundred pomegranates, in two rows round about; and so with the other capital. He set up the pillars at the vestibule of the Temple; he set up the pillar on the south and called its name Jachin; and he set up the pillar on the north and called its name Boaz. And upon the tops of the pillars was lily-work. Thus the work of the pillars was finished." (1 Kings 7:13-22 RSV)
